Definition: Able to work means that a person is capable of employment. If someone is able to work, they cannot receive unemployment benefits due to illness or injury.

For example, in the case of International Union, et al. v. Johnson Controls, Inc., the court ruled that employees who were able to work could not be excluded from certain jobs based on their reproductive abilities. In Berrios v. 735 Ave. of the Americas, LLC, the court found that an employee who was able to work was not entitled to workers' compensation benefits for an injury that did not prevent them from working.
