Legal Definitions - accord

Accord has three main meanings:

1. A peaceful agreement, especially between countries.
2. An offer to replace a previous obligation with a new one, and the acceptance of that offer. Either party can suggest an accord. If the new obligation is fulfilled, it is called a satisfaction.
3. A reference indicating that a source matches another source previously mentioned by the author. For example, if one participant in a negotiation reported a heated debate, an accord citation could point to a matching report from another participant.

Examples:

• The two countries reached an accord to end the conflict.
• The debtor proposed an accord to pay a smaller amount in exchange for the creditor forgiving the rest of the debt.
• The journalist used an accord citation to show that two sources had reported the same information.
