Actual allegiance refers to the obedience and loyalty that a person owes to the government or sovereign of the country they are residing in. This loyalty is given in exchange for the benefits and protection provided by the state.

There are different types of allegiance:

• Acquired allegiance: This is the allegiance owed by a naturalized citizen.
• Natural allegiance: This is the allegiance that native-born citizens or subjects owe to their nation.
• Permanent allegiance: This is the lasting allegiance owed to a state by citizens or subjects.
• Temporary allegiance: This is the impermanent allegiance owed to a state by a resident alien during the period of residence.

For example, if a person from the United States travels to France, they owe actual allegiance to the French government while they are in the country. This means they must follow the laws and regulations of France and show loyalty to the French government.

However, foreign sovereigns, their representatives, and military personnel are typically excepted from this requirement.

In medieval times, vassals owed actual allegiance to their liege lord, which meant they had to be loyal and obedient to their lord in exchange for protection and support.
