Otherwise called; another name for something or someone.

• John Smith, alias dictus "Jack the Ripper", was a notorious serial killer in the late 1800s.
• The author of the book, alias dictus "Mark Twain", was actually Samuel Clemens.

These examples show how someone or something can be known by more than one name. In the first example, John Smith is also known as "Jack the Ripper". In the second example, the author of the book used a pen name, "Mark Twain", instead of his real name, Samuel Clemens.
