Apartheid is a system of racial segregation where one group of people is denied political and civil rights. The word "apartheid" comes from an Afrikaans word meaning "separating, setting apart." This policy is based on separating people based on their race or ethnicity, often by designating certain areas as off-limits to certain groups.

• In South Africa, apartheid laws separated the white minority from the black majority. Black people were not allowed to live in certain areas or attend certain schools.
• In Israel, Palestinians are often restricted from entering certain areas through military checkpoints and roadblocks. This is considered by some to be an apartheid regime.
