As is a Latin term that has two meanings:

1. In Roman law, it refers to a pound weight or a coin weighing a pound, which is divisible into 12 parts called unciae. It was used to denote interest rates. For example, if someone borrowed 100 asses at 5% interest, they would have to pay back 105 asses.
2. In Roman and civil law, it refers to a whole inheritance or the entirety of an asset. For instance, if someone inherits a house, car, and some money, they would receive the as of the inheritance.
