Bar examination is a test that a person must pass to become a licensed attorney. It is a written exam that is different in every state, but most exams include a national multiple-choice test called the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) and an essay portion that tests federal and state laws. Some states also have a performance test to assess lawyering skills.

• John wants to become a lawyer in California. He must pass the California Bar Examination to get his license.
• Samantha passed the bar examination in New York, but she wants to practice law in Florida. She must take the Florida Bar Examination to get her license in that state.
