The Board of Appeals is a group of people who make decisions about patent applications. They used to be part of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, but now their work is done by the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences.

The Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences is a group of people who hear appeals from patent applicants whose claims have been rejected by a patent examiner. They also handle interference contests between two or more applicants trying to patent the same invention. This tribunal used to be handled by the Board of Appeals and the Board of Patent Interferences.

John applied for a patent for his new invention, but the patent examiner rejected his application. John appealed the decision to the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. The board reviewed John's application and the examiner's decision and made a new decision. They either agreed with the examiner or overturned the decision and granted John's patent.
