Definition: A brevet is a commission given to a military officer to promote them to a higher rank during wartime, but without an increase in pay. It can also refer to a privilege or warrant granted by the government to a private person, allowing them to exercise an exclusive privilege or receive a special benefit. For example, a brevet d'invention is a patent for an invention. In simpler terms, a brevet is a way to recognize someone's achievements or grant them special privileges without necessarily giving them more money.
