A CASA volunteer is a specially trained and screened child-welfare volunteer appointed by the court to conduct an independent investigation of both the state agency and the family and to submit a report with findings and recommendations. They sometimes act as guardians ad litem.

• A CASA volunteer provides independent assessment of the child's needs.
• A CASA volunteer acts as an advocate for the child.
• A CASA volunteer monitors agency decision-making and court proceedings.

For example, if a child is in foster care, a CASA volunteer may visit the child regularly to assess their needs and make recommendations to the court about what is in the child's best interest. The volunteer may also attend court hearings and advocate for the child's needs and rights.
