The Congressional Globe was a privately issued record of the proceedings in Congress. It was the only record of congressional speeches and statements from 1833 until the publicly printed Congressional Record appeared in 1873.

For example, if someone wanted to know what was said during a particular debate in Congress in 1850, they would have to consult the Congressional Globe. It contained a verbatim transcript of everything that was said on the floor of Congress, including speeches, debates, and votes.
