Consistorium is a term used in Roman law. It refers to the emperor's private council that served as both a general council of state and a supreme court of law during the later Empire.

For example, if a legal dispute arose between two parties, they could appeal to the consistorium for a final decision. The council would hear both sides of the argument and make a ruling based on the law.
