Consular Jurisdiction

Consular jurisdiction refers to the legal authority of a consul to perform certain judicial functions in a foreign country. This includes performing marriage ceremonies between citizens of the consul's home country who are residing in the foreign country.

For example, if a French couple is living in the United States and wishes to get married, they can go to the French consulate in the US and have a French consul perform the wedding ceremony. The consul has the legal authority to do so because of consular jurisdiction.

Another example is if a US citizen is arrested in a foreign country, they can seek assistance from the US consulate in that country. The consul can provide legal advice and assistance, and may even be able to visit the citizen in jail.
