Definition: Courtesy supervision is when a parolee is monitored by a correctional agency in a different area than where they were sentenced. This is usually done when the offense is not serious and the parolee's rehabilitation would be better served in another jurisdiction. It is an informal arrangement between correctional authorities.

For example, if someone was sentenced to parole in California but then moved to Oregon, they may be put under courtesy supervision by the Oregon correctional agency. This means that the Oregon agency would monitor the parolee's behavior and ensure they are following the terms of their parole, even though they were not originally sentenced in Oregon.

Another example could be if a parolee has family or job opportunities in a different state. They may request to be put under courtesy supervision in that state so they can be closer to their support system or employment opportunities.

These examples illustrate how courtesy supervision allows for more flexibility in the parole system. It allows parolees to move to different areas and still receive the necessary supervision and support to successfully complete their parole.
