Definition: Decolonization is the process by which a colonial power gives up control over a colony, allowing the colony to become independent and self-governing.

For example, India was a colony of Great Britain until 1947. Through a process of negotiation and political struggle, India gained independence and became a sovereign nation. Similarly, many African countries gained independence from European colonial powers in the mid-20th century.

Decolonization is an important process in the history of international relations, as it represents a shift away from colonialism and towards self-determination for formerly colonized peoples.
