Definition of diplomatic immunity
Definition: Diplomatic immunity is a general exemption of diplomatic ministers from the operation of local law. This means that they are not subject to the laws of the country they are visiting. However, if a minister is plotting against the security of the host nation, they may be arrested and sent out of the country.
Example: A foreign ambassador is visiting the United States. While driving, they accidentally hit a pedestrian. Because of diplomatic immunity, they cannot be arrested or charged with a crime in the United States. Instead, they will be dealt with by their home country.
This example illustrates how diplomatic immunity protects foreign diplomats from being prosecuted in the country they are visiting. It is important to note that diplomatic immunity is not absolute and can be waived in certain circumstances.
