EMANCIPATE
To set free from legal, social, or political restraint; especially, to free from slavery or bondage. It can also mean to release a child from the control, support, and responsibility of a parent or guardian.
- Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 declared that all slaves in Confederate-held territory were to be set free.
- At the age of 16, Jane was legally emancipated from her parents and was able to make her own decisions.
