Definition of Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission

The Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission is an independent group of five people who make sure that mines in the United States follow safety rules. They also help solve problems that come up because of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977.

For example, if a mine owner is not following safety rules, the commission can investigate and make sure they start following the rules. Or if a miner thinks they were treated unfairly, the commission can listen to both sides and make a decision.

The commission was created in 1977 to make sure that miners are safe while they work. They watch over coal mines, metal mines, and nonmetal mines that are both above and below the ground.
