Definition of International Monetary Fund
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) was established in July 1994 in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire and became operational on March 1, 1947. Its main purpose is to promote international monetary cooperation, facilitate balanced growth in international trade, and maintain exchange arrangements among its member countries.
One of the key functions of the IMF is to establish a Par Value system, where member countries agree to keep their exchange rates in terms of the U.S. dollar and the value of the dollar in terms of gold. This system, also known as the Bretton Woods system, was in place until 1971 when the U.S. government suspended the convertibility of the dollar and dollar reserves held by other governments into gold.
For example, if a country's currency is worth $1.50 USD, the IMF would ensure that the country maintains that exchange rate with the U.S. dollar. This helps to promote stability in international trade and investment.
The IMF also provides financial assistance to member countries experiencing economic difficulties, such as balance of payment problems or currency crises. This assistance can come in the form of loans or policy advice.
