Legal Definitions - Landrum–Griffin Act

The Landrum-Griffin Act is a federal law that was originally enacted in 1959 as the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act. Its purpose is to:

1. prevent corruption in union leadership and undemocratic conduct in internal union affairs
2. outlaw certain types of secondary boycotts
3. prevent hot-cargo provisions in collective-bargaining agreements

For example, the Landrum-Griffin Act makes it illegal for union leaders to use union funds for personal expenses or to engage in activities that are not in the best interest of the union members. It also prohibits unions from engaging in certain types of boycotts that could harm businesses that are not directly involved in a labor dispute.

A land sales contract is an agreement between two parties for the sale of land. It is also known as a contract for deed. The contract creates obligations that are enforceable by law. It typically includes:

• the purchase price
• the payment schedule
• the rights and responsibilities of both parties

For example, a land sales contract may be used when a buyer wants to purchase land but cannot obtain financing from a bank. The buyer and seller agree on a purchase price and payment schedule, and the buyer makes payments directly to the seller until the land is paid off. Once the land is paid off, the seller transfers ownership to the buyer.
