Least-Restrictive Educational Environment

The least-restrictive educational environment is the setting in which a student with a disability can receive an education alongside non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible. This is required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

• A student with a hearing impairment may be provided with a sign language interpreter in a regular classroom setting, rather than being placed in a separate classroom with other students who have hearing impairments.
• A student with a learning disability may receive extra support and accommodations in a regular classroom, rather than being placed in a special education classroom.

These examples illustrate the concept of providing education in the least-restrictive environment possible. By providing support and accommodations in a regular classroom setting, students with disabilities can learn alongside their non-disabled peers and have access to the same educational opportunities.
