Definition of least-restrictive educational environment
Least-Restrictive Educational Environment
The least-restrictive educational environment is the setting in which a student with a disability can receive an education alongside non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible. This is required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- A student with a hearing impairment may be provided with a sign language interpreter in a regular classroom setting, rather than being placed in a separate classroom with other students who have hearing impairments.
- A student with a learning disability may receive extra support and accommodations in a regular classroom, rather than being placed in a special education classroom.
These examples illustrate the concept of providing education in the least-restrictive environment possible. By providing support and accommodations in a regular classroom setting, students with disabilities can learn alongside their non-disabled peers and have access to the same educational opportunities.
The life of the law has not been logic; it has been experience.

Simple Definition
Least-Restrictive Educational Environment: This means that children with disabilities should be educated in a way that allows them to be with other children who do not have disabilities as much as possible. This is important because it helps children with disabilities to learn and grow just like other children. It is required by law under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
It's every lawyer's dream to help shape the law, not just react to it.
