A legal description is a detailed and formal description of a piece of real property that is complete enough to identify and locate it. It includes any parts of the property that are subject to an easement or reservation. The description can be made by referring to a government survey, metes and bounds, or lot numbers of a recorded plat.

For example, a legal description of a property might include its exact boundaries, such as "beginning at a point on the north side of Main Street, 100 feet west of Elm Street, and running thence north 200 feet."
