Definition: Licere is a Latin verb that means to be allowed by law. For example, if a law says that people can drive a car at the age of 16, then it is licere for a 16-year-old to drive a car. In Roman law, there was a stipulation called habere licere, which guaranteed the buyer indemnity from eviction. This means that if someone bought a property and later found out that they were not allowed to own it, they would be protected by this stipulation.
