Definition: Lineal means something that is passed down from one generation to another in a direct line of descent. It refers to things that are inherited from our ancestors, especially from our direct blood relatives. For example, if your grandfather passed down a family heirloom to your father, who then passed it down to you, that heirloom is a lineal possession. Another example is when a king passes down his throne to his son, who then becomes the next king. This is a lineal succession.
Example: The lineal descent of the British monarchy is from Queen Elizabeth II to her son, Prince Charles, and then to his son, Prince William. This means that Prince William is the direct heir to the throne and will become the next king. This is an example of lineal succession.
