Medical marijuana refers to the use of marijuana for its medicinal properties. Patients take medical marijuana to relieve pain, nausea, and increase appetite. In California, patients can purchase medical cannabis with a valid recommendation from a physician.

For example, a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy may use medical marijuana to alleviate nausea and increase their appetite. Another example is a patient with chronic pain who uses medical marijuana to manage their symptoms.

However, the legality of medical marijuana is still a controversial issue. In the case of Gonzales v. Raich, the Supreme Court ruled that Congress has the power to regulate the growth and use of marijuana, even if it conflicts with state law, as it can affect interstate commerce.
