A method patent is a type of patent that protects a process or method of doing something. It gives the inventor the right to exclude others from making, using, marketing, selling, offering for sale, or importing an invention for a specified period of time (usually 20 years from the date of filing) if the device or process is novel, useful, and non-obvious.

For example, if someone invents a new way of making a cake, they can apply for a method patent to protect their process. This would prevent others from using the same process to make cakes without the inventor's permission.

Other types of patents include design patents, which protect the appearance of an article of manufacture, and utility patents, which protect machines, processes, and compositions of matter.
