NATIONAL CAPITAL PLANNING COMMISSION

The National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) is a federal commission consisting of 12 members. Its primary responsibility is to plan the development of federal lands and facilities in the National Capital region. This region includes the District of Columbia and six nearby counties, two in Maryland and four in Virginia. The NCPC was originally established in 1924 as the National Capital Parks Commission, a park-planning agency.

One example of the NCPC's work is the development of the National Mall. The NCPC worked with architects and planners to create a plan for the Mall that included new museums, improved landscaping, and better pedestrian access.

Another example is the NCPC's involvement in the development of the Southwest Waterfront. The NCPC worked with local officials and developers to create a plan for the area that included new parks, housing, and retail space.

These examples illustrate how the NCPC works to plan and develop federal lands and facilities in the National Capital region. By working with local officials, developers, and architects, the NCPC is able to create plans that improve the quality of life for residents and visitors to the region.
