Legal Definitions - National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL)

The National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) is a non-profit organization made up of commissioners appointed by each state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands. The main goal of this organization is to discuss and debate which areas of the law require uniformity among the states and territories.

To achieve this goal, the NCCUSL drafts Uniform Acts that are proposed to the various jurisdictions as either model acts or uniform acts. Model acts, such as the Model Penal Code, are suggested laws that states can choose to adopt or modify as they see fit. Uniform acts, such as the Uniform Commercial Code, are laws that are adopted by states with little or no modification, ensuring consistency across state lines.
