Definition of Norris–La Guardia Act
The Norris–La Guardia Act is a federal law passed in 1932 that limits the power of federal courts to issue injunctions in labor disputes and forbids them from ruling on labor policy.
The purpose of the law is to prevent federal courts from abusing their power to issue injunctions and to promote the use of collective bargaining to resolve labor disputes. It also aims to declare the government's neutrality on labor policy and to curtail employers' use of injunctions to stop union activity.
For example, if a group of workers goes on strike, their employer cannot go to federal court and ask for an injunction to force them back to work. Instead, the employer and the workers' union must negotiate a solution through collective bargaining.
The Norris–La Guardia Act is also known as the Labor Disputes Act or the Anti-Injunction Act.
It is better to risk saving a guilty man than to condemn an innocent one.
