Legal Definitions - Office of Domestic Preparedness

The Office of Domestic Preparedness (ODP) is a unit within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that helps state and local governments prepare for and respond to acts of terrorism. The ODP provides technical assistance, training, and equipment to emergency responders and helps plan and conduct disaster drills.

For example, the ODP might provide funding for a local police department to purchase protective gear for their officers or offer training to firefighters on how to respond to a chemical attack. They also work with local officials to develop emergency response plans and coordinate with other agencies during a crisis.

The ODP was originally part of the U.S. Department of Justice but was transferred to the Department of Homeland Security in 2003.
