A point system is a method used in criminal law to assign incremental units to traffic violations. When a person commits a traffic violation, they receive a certain number of points. If a person accumulates a certain number of points within a year, their driving privileges may be automatically suspended.

For example, if a person is caught speeding, they may receive two points on their driving record. If they run a red light, they may receive three points. If they accumulate a total of 12 points within a year, their driver's license may be suspended.

Another example is if a person is caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they may receive six points on their driving record. If they accumulate a total of 12 points within a year, their driver's license may be suspended.
