The Praetorian Edict was a proclamation issued by a praetor at the start of their term, explaining the grounds on which a formula would be granted.

In ancient Rome, a formula was a written document that set out the terms of a legal case. The Praetorian Edict helped guide judges in deciding cases by providing them with a set of principles to follow.

For example, an edict might declare that sellers would be strictly liable for latent defects in goods, or dictate how dogs and wild animals for sale should be confined to protect the public.
