Definition: In civil law, a propositus is a person whose ancestry is being traced or whose rights and obligations are being questioned. It is also known as persona proposita. For example, in a legal case involving inheritance, the propositus would be the person from whom the inheritance is being traced. In genealogy, the propositus would be the ancestor from whom a family tree is being constructed.
