A republic is a type of government where the people have the power and choose representatives to make decisions for them. This is different from a pure democracy where everyone makes decisions together, and from a government ruled by one person or a small group.

For example, the United States is a republic. The citizens vote for their leaders, who then make decisions on their behalf. This allows for a large group of people to have a say in how the country is run, rather than just one person or a small group.
