Definition: A SLAPP, or strategic lawsuit against public participation, is a legal action filed by a person or organization with power and money to silence individuals or groups who speak out against their interests. This type of lawsuit is often used to intimidate and discourage people from participating in public debates or protests, especially those related to environmental issues or other public-interest matters. The goal of a SLAPP is not to win the case, but to burden the defendant with legal fees and other costs, and to send a message to others that they should stay quiet or face similar consequences.
Examples: A developer files a SLAPP against a group of residents who are protesting the construction of a new shopping mall in their neighborhood. An oil company sues a group of activists who are advocating for stricter regulations on fracking. In both cases, the SLAPP is used as a tool to silence opposition and protect the interests of those with power and money.
