SOLA SUPERVIVENTIA

Sola superviventia (soh-lə soo-pər-vi-ven-shee-ə). [Law Latin] Historically, it means by mere survival.

During the war, many people lost their homes and businesses. Only a few buildings remained standing, and those were the ones that had sola superviventia.

After the earthquake, the rescue team searched for survivors in the rubble. They found a woman who had sola superviventia, meaning she survived by sheer luck.

The examples illustrate how sola superviventia means surviving by chance or luck. In the first example, the buildings that survived did so because they were lucky enough to withstand the destruction.
