Legal Definitions - United Nations General Assembly

The United NationsGeneral Assembly (UNGA) is one of the five main parts of the United Nations. It has representatives from all 192 countries that are members of the UN. The UNGA has many important jobs:

• To talk about and suggest ways to keep peace and security in the world, including getting rid of weapons
• To talk about any problems that might hurt peace and security in the world, and suggest ways to fix them
• To talk about and suggest ways to make international laws and human rights better
• To suggest ways to help countries work together in areas like health, education, and culture
• To suggest ways to solve problems between countries without fighting
• To listen to reports from other parts of the United Nations
• To decide how much money each country should give to the United Nations
• To choose some of the people who work for the United Nations, like the Secretary-General

For example, the UNGA might talk about how to stop countries from making nuclear weapons. Or they might talk about how to help countries that are having problems with their economies. They might also talk about how to make sure that people all over the world have the same rights and freedoms.
