Versus

Versus means against. It is often abbreviated as v. or vs. and is used in case names to show the two opposing parties, for example, McDonald v. Chicago, 130 S.Ct. 3020 (2010).

1. The football game was between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys, also written as New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys.

2. The court case of Brown v. Board of Education was a landmark case in which the Supreme Court ruled that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.

The examples illustrate how versus is used to show two opposing parties. In the first example, the two football teams are playing against each other. In the second example, the court case involves two parties, Brown and the Board of Education, who have opposing views on segregation in public schools.
