An able-bodied seaman is a skilled and experienced sailor who is certified by an inspecting authority and qualified for all seaman's duties. They are employed on navigating vessels as employees below the rank of officer and contribute to the function of the vessel or the accomplishment of its mission. They are also covered under the Jones Act and the general maritime law in case of injuries.
