Legal Definitions - Department of Housing and Urban Development

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is a part of the federal government that oversees programs related to housing needs, fair-housing opportunities, and improving and developing communities. It was established in 1965 by the Department of Housing and Urban Development Act.

For example, HUD provides funding for affordable housing programs, such as the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, which helps low-income families pay for housing. HUD also enforces fair housing laws to prevent discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, and familial status.

The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development is the head of the department and is responsible for carrying out its mission.
