A fact finder, also known as a trier of fact, is a person who is impartial and designated to evaluate the facts underlying a particular matter of a case. This person is responsible for determining what really happened in a case based on the evidence presented.

• In a jury trial, the jury is the fact finder that decides what really happened in the case at hand. For example, if someone is accused of a crime, the jury will listen to the evidence presented by both sides and then determine whether the accused is guilty or not guilty.
• In a bench trial, the judge is the fact finder that decides what really happened. For example, if there is a dispute between two parties, the judge will listen to the evidence presented by both sides and then make a decision based on the facts.
• In an official investigation, an agent or committee may be appointed to determine the facts. For example, if there is an investigation into a company's financial practices, an agent may be appointed to gather evidence and determine whether any wrongdoing occurred.
