A herald is a person who has two main roles:

1. In England and Scotland, a herald is one of several officers who keep genealogical lists and tables, adjust armorial bearings, and regulate the ceremonies at royal coronations and funerals. There are six heralds in England and three in Scotland.
2. In history, a herald is a messenger who announces royal or state proclamations and carries diplomatic messages between kings or countries. This includes proclamations of war, peace, or truce.

For example, in medieval times, a herald would be responsible for announcing the arrival of a king or queen to a town or city. They would also carry messages between different countries during times of war or peace negotiations.

Another example is during a royal coronation, a herald would be responsible for announcing the arrival of the new monarch and leading the procession.
