Legal Definitions - IEP

IEP stands for Individualized Education Program. It is a written plan for students with disabilities that is developed, reviewed, and revised in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

The IEP identifies a student’s unique needs and how the school will address those needs. It outlines how specially designed instruction will be provided to support the student in the general education curriculum and help them reach the same learning standards as non-disabled students.

John is a student with dyslexia. His IEP includes accommodations such as extra time on tests, access to audiobooks, and a reading specialist to help him with his reading skills. The IEP also outlines how John's progress will be monitored and how his accommodations will be adjusted as needed.
