Simple Definition
Term: mensura domini regis
Definition: Mensura domini regis was a set of standard weights and measures established by King Richard I in 1197. It meant that there would be only one weight and one measure used throughout the kingdom, and certain people in every city and borough would be responsible for keeping them. These original standards were called pondus regis and mensura domini regis. They were kept in the exchequer, and all weights and measures had to be made the same as them. This was important because it made sure that everyone was using the same measurements and no one could cheat others by using different ones.
