The Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) is a part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Its main responsibility is to enforce the fair-housing laws and regulations that prohibit discrimination in public and private housing.

For example, if a landlord refuses to rent an apartment to someone because of their race, religion, or disability, that would be considered discrimination. FHEO would investigate the complaint and take action if necessary to ensure that the landlord follows the law.

FHEO also provides education and outreach to help people understand their rights and responsibilities under fair-housing laws. This includes training for housing providers and community organizations, as well as resources for individuals who believe they have experienced discrimination.
