Possession of stolen goods is a crime where a person knowingly acquires or transports property that has been unlawfully obtained.

To be charged with possession of stolen goods, four key elements must be present:

1. The person is in possession of property
2. The property was stolen
3. The person knew or reasonably believed the property was stolen
4. The possessor was acting dishonestly

The severity of the crime can be either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the value or type of property stolen.

Example 1: John buys a bike from a stranger for a very low price. Later, he finds out that the bike was stolen. John is now in possession of stolen goods.

Example 2: Sarah's friend gives her a laptop as a gift. Later, Sarah finds out that the laptop was stolen. Even though Sarah did not know the laptop was stolen when she received it, she is still in possession of stolen goods.

These examples illustrate how possession of stolen goods can occur even if the person did not steal the property themselves. It is important to be cautious when acquiring property from unknown sources to avoid unintentionally possessing stolen goods.
