Legal Definitions - Supreme Court of Judicature

The Supreme Court of Judicature is the highest court in England and Wales. It is made up of three courts:

• The High Court of Justice
• The Court of Appeal
• The Crown Court

The Supreme Court was created in 1873 by the Judicature Act. This act combined several existing superior courts, including the High Court of Chancery, the court of Queen's Bench, the court of Exchequer, the High Court of Admiralty, the court of Probate, and the London court of Bankruptcy.

The Supreme Court is responsible for hearing the most important and complex cases in the country. It is the final court of appeal, which means that its decisions cannot be appealed to any other court.

For example, if someone is convicted of a crime and appeals their conviction, the case may eventually be heard by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court's decision in the case will be final, and cannot be appealed any further.
