Legal Definitions - ward holding

Ward holding is a type of feudal tenure in Scots law. It is similar to what is known as knight service in England.

For example, if a lord granted a piece of land to a vassal in exchange for military service, this would be considered a ward holding. The vassal would be responsible for providing a certain number of knights or soldiers to the lord when called upon.

This type of feudal tenure was common in medieval times and was used as a way for lords to ensure they had a standing army at their disposal.
