Definition of National Security Council

The National Security Council (NSC) is an agency within the Executive Office of the President that advises the President on matters related to national security. It was established by the National Security Act of 1947.

The NSC is responsible for providing the President with information and recommendations on issues such as military strategy, foreign policy, and intelligence gathering. It also coordinates the efforts of various government agencies involved in national security.

For example, if there is a threat of a terrorist attack on the United States, the NSC would work with the Department of Homeland Security, the Central Intelligence Agency, and other agencies to gather information and develop a plan to prevent the attack.

The NSC is made up of the President, Vice President, Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, and other high-ranking officials. It is chaired by the President or the National Security Advisor, who is appointed by the President.
