Monomachy (pronounced məˈnɒməki) is a historical term that refers to a duel or single combat between two or more people. It is a prearranged fight with deadly weapons, fought under specific rules and usually witnessed by at least two people. The purpose of a monomachy is to settle a previous quarrel or to seek revenge for a deed.

In England and the United States, death resulting from a duel is treated as murder, and the seconds (people who assist the combatants) may be held responsible as accessories. If the duel does not result in death, it is considered a misdemeanor.

For example, in the past, if two knights had a disagreement, they might settle it with a monomachy. They would agree on the weapons and rules, and then fight until one of them was injured or killed. The winner would be considered the victor, and the matter would be settled.

Another example is the famous duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr in 1804. They had a long-standing political rivalry, and Hamilton accused Burr of being untrustworthy. They agreed to a monomachy, and Hamilton was fatally shot.

These examples illustrate how monomachies were used in the past to settle disputes and seek revenge. However, they are now illegal and considered a form of murder.
